Overview

Aarhus University offers a limited number of Danish state scholarships for non-EU students, financed by the Danish state. Aarhus University says it does not have its own scholarship funds for this purpose and relies solely on Danish state funding. The university automatically considers eligible applicants when they apply for admission.

Scholarships can be tuition fee waivers and may include a monthly grant toward living expenses, typically but not always for the duration of the Master’s degree programme. Faculty-specific options are listed for the Faculty of Arts, Aarhus BSS, the Faculty of Natural Sciences, and the Faculty of Technical Sciences, with some faculties offering tuition fee waivers only.

For selection among academically qualified applicants, Aarhus University states that priority is given to applicants with excellent academic qualifications. Due to the limited number of scholarships, the university says it cannot offer scholarships to all highly qualified applicants. Applicants for the Master’s degree programme are assessed through the university’s general selection process.

If selected, the applicant receives a scholarship offer in the application system alongside the letter of admission, with a very short deadline to accept. For Natural and Technical Sciences, Aarhus University describes an ongoing process during March with a later possible tuition fee waiver offer prior to the acceptance deadline. If no tuition waiver is received by the latest date stated for the admission period, the applicant is required to pay tuition fees.

Eligibility

  • Applicant must be from outside Europe. Applicant must be liable to pay tuition fees. Applicant must apply for a Master’s degree programme and be considered for a tuition waiver/scholarship only if the application is submitted no later than 15 January (summer admission) or 15 September (winter admission). Applicants to whom EU/EEA/Swiss status applies cannot apply for scholarships at Aarhus University. Scholarship is connected very specifically to the applicant’s Master’s degree programme and cannot be transferred to another degree programme at Aarhus University. Selection uses academic qualifications, with priority given to applicants with excellent academic qualifications.

Benefits

  • Tuition fee waiver (full or partly tuition waiver as applicable). Monthly grant towards living expenses for some scholarship types, typically but not always for the duration of the Master’s degree programme. Faculty-specific examples listed by Aarhus University: Faculty of Arts: tuition fee waiver + monthly grant towards living expenses.Aarhus BSS: tuition fee waiver + monthly grant towards living expenses.Faculty of Natural Sciences: tuition fee waiver.Faculty of Technical Sciences: tuition fee waiver. If tuition waiver only is offered, the page states it is a requirement for obtaining a student residence permit that the applicant has sufficient funds to support themselves financially during their stay in Denmark.

How to apply

  1. Apply for admission to Aarhus University for a Master’s degree programme. Aarhus University states that, when applying for admission, the application is automatically assessed for Danish State Scholarships together with the academic assessment of the applicant’s qualifications. Do not upload any additional documentation to the admission application for the scholarship. Ensure the admission application is submitted by 15 January (summer admission) or 15 September (winter admission) to be considered for a tuition waiver/scholarship. If selected, accept the scholarship offer within the very short deadline shown in the application system along with the letter of admission. If applying through Natural and Technical Sciences: if not selected for a tuition fee waiver at the time of the letter of admission, Aarhus University states there is still a chance to be selected later prior to the acceptance deadline 1 April, and that the award process continues throughout March. If no tuition waiver offer is received by 1 April/1 November at the latest (as stated for the admission period), the applicant is required to pay tuition fees at Aarhus University.

Documents required

  • No additional documentation is required for the scholarship application beyond the admission application. Aarhus University instructs applicants not to upload any additional documentation to the application for admission.

Please note: scholarship values, the number of awards, eligibility and deadlines change from year to year and are indicative here. Always confirm the current details on the official provider or university website before applying, and beware of any third party asking for payment to “secure” a scholarship.
