Ecole Nationale d'Administration: the applicant's brief

6 findings
  1. The short answer

Ecole Nationale d'Administration was a public institution in France focused on training for the senior civil service. It suits applicants who are looking for a now-closed French administrative school rather than a university with a current study offer.

  2. What you can study

Ecole Nationale d'Administration is a former French grande école that was created to democratize access to the senior civil service. It was dissolved on 31 December 2021 and replaced by the Institut national du service public (INSP), so the programme catalogue is no longer active there.

  3. Getting in

Because the school was dissolved on 31 December 2021, there is no current admissions route to apply to there. Anyone checking options for public administration in France should confirm current entry arrangements and eligibility directly with the Institut national du service public.

  4. What it costs

The university does not publish a current tuition fee because it no longer admits students. Confirm any relevant charges, and any living costs for study in France, with the Institut national du service public or its admissions office.

  5. Coming from abroad

The school no longer accepts new students, so the key question for an international applicant is which French public-administration institution now offers the relevant path. Check the official site for the language of instruction, eligibility rules, visa implications, and whether your qualifications are accepted.

  6. How it compares

France has 298 universities, but this institution should be viewed differently from a current university option because it was dissolved in 2021. Its main significance is historical: it was a public grande école built around senior civil-service training, not a present-day study destination.

Written from this university's catalogue entry and its cited encyclopedia summary. Figures are only shown where the institution or a cited source publishes them — always confirm fees and entry requirements with the university itself before applying.

Overview

The École nationale d'administration was a French grande école, created in 1945 by the then provisional chief of government Charles de Gaulle and principal co-author of the 1958 Constitution Michel Debré, to democratize access to the senior civil service. The school was frequently criticized from the 1970s onward for having built an incredibly elitist culture as well as being a stronghold for technocrats. As a result, it was dissolved on 31 December 2021 and replaced by the Institut national du service public (INSP).
