Master of Arts Music Therapy

The Master of Arts Music Therapy at Theologische Hochschule Friedensau trains you in music therapy theory and practice, and it includes internships during your studies. The course supports work therapeutically or preventively and leads to a Master of Arts degree in Music Therapy.

The program is part-time and has a standard period of study of 6 semesters (120 ECTS credit points). The delivery uses three block weeks per semester on a special campus in the countryside. You also complete three internships and write a Master’s thesis with an empirical study at the end.

A successful degree at least at Bachelor's level from a university, college or university of applied sciences, e.g. in social work, social pedagogy, psychology, education, nursing sciences, sociology, political science, medicine, musicology or music.

• Applicants must provide proof of participation in at least 50 hours of self-awareness courses. This includes: own therapy experiences, self-awareness in individual and group settings, self- and other-perception-orientated courses from previous study achievements and professionally guided discussions with one's own person and biography (e.g. balint groups, psychodrama). A maximum of half of the required 50 hours can be made up within the first 2 semesters upon application to the examination board.
• Successful completion of the aptitude test: A selection interview with two therapeutic specialists takes place to assess the personal aptitude and motivation of applicants.
• In addition, applicants take a musical aptitude test in accordance with Section 27 (7) sentence 2 of the Saxony-Anhalt Higher Education Act (LSA-HSG). The musical aptitude test takes place with the head of the degree program and an external lecturer who has outstanding subject-related achievements in the field of diagnostics and music therapy.

• Adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, neonatology, geriatrics, oncology, psychosomatics and psychotherapy, hospice, rehabilitation, pain therapy
• Socio-educational/educational: schools, facilities for people with disabilities, children's and youth homes, social and curative education centres, recreational educational facilities, creative workshops
• Counselling and preventative: spiritual care, self-help groups, migration and addiction counselling, crisis intervention, spas and health resorts, salutogenesis
• Outpatient: freelance work in own social and/or psychotherapeutic practice
• Teaching and/or researching: music therapy, methodological-didactic or methodological work in training or research institutions
