DAAD HAW.International Scholarships

DAAD’s HAW.International provides scholarships for students in Bachelor, Master, and Diplom programmes at German universities of applied sciences (HAW). The programme objective is to support students from HAW for study stays abroad and to support universities with cooperation projects with international partners.

Applicants are students of all subject areas enrolled at German HAW. The programme also allows applications without German citizenship, subject to the requirements in the programme’s important scholarship information under section A, point 1. It covers study stays during the degree and stays for the thesis component abroad.

Selection can be two-stage when there is a high number of applications. A preliminary selection considers academic performance while factoring in individual special life circumstances, followed by a comprehensive assessment by subject-specific selection committee members. There is no personal presentation planned in this scholarship programme.

Funding duration varies by stay type: study stays are at least the stated minimum and up to the stated maximum, and thesis-related stays are at least the stated minimum and up to the stated maximum. The scholarship includes monthly payments (set according to the host country) plus additional support such as travel allowances and insurance; additional family-related and disability-related support may be requested after funding begins under stated conditions.

• Applicant must be enrolled at a state or state-recognised university of applied sciences (HAW) or a University of Applied Sciences (Fachhochschule) in Germany.
• Applicant may also be enrolled at the Duale Hochschule Baden-Württemberg or the Duale Hochschule Gera-Eisenach.
• Applicants in Bachelor or Diplom programmes must be in at least the second semester or in the second half of the first year of study at the time of application.
• Applicants may apply in all subject fields (all Fachrichtungen).
• Application is also possible without German citizenship; requirements are linked to the programme’s important scholarship information under section A, point 1.
• Language skills: applicants must prove they already have the language skills required by the host institution for admission to study or for implementing the proposed activity at the time of application.
• Applicants must be able to research, themselves, the information relevant for the feasibility of the proposed activity (including residence and travel formalities).
• For students applying for study or thesis activities: study stays and thesis stays are funded, but simultaneous funding through Erasmus or PROMOS and HAW.International is excluded.
• For certain countries, a scholarship application for stays in that country is not possible due to the local security situation; generally scholarship start is only possible if there is no travel warning.

• Monthly scholarship payment: a monthly rate set according to the host country (the programme states that the rates for students/graduates apply).
• Travel cost allowance: amount varies by host country.
• Insurance benefits: health insurance, accident insurance, and private liability insurance.
• For study stays: contribution toward any tuition fees that may arise, up to an upper limit depending on the destination country.
• For thesis-related stays: contribution for travel in the host country that is directly related to the project.
• Contribution toward a language course connected to the scholarship: local language or the language of instruction/work.
• Additional possible benefits after funding begins, under specified conditions: family benefits for accompanying spouse/partner and/or children.
• Additional possible support when a disability or chronic illness exists: on request, a contribution toward justified extra costs abroad that are required to implement the project and are not covered by a third party; whether and in what amount it is paid is determined individually.
• Third-party benefits: benefits from third parties (examples given include side income, funding from talent-support organisations, and other second scholarships) are partially credited against the DAAD scholarship or excluded in part, as described in the programme’s important scholarship information.

1. Use DAAD’s scholarship portal and select the relevant scholarship programme and destination details (where required for country-specific notes).
2. Register in the DAAD portal and complete the online application fully.
3. Upload the required application documents in the DAAD portal under “Anlagen”.
4. Use a desktop computer for the application, as the use of the application portal with mobile devices is limited.

• Tabular curriculum vitae.
• Detailed description of the study project (study plan, as a separate document) or the project for the thesis (research plan), with a maximum length of five pages as a separate document.
• If travels in the host country are planned for thesis-related stays: cost estimate for travel in the host country, including confirmation by the supervising university lecturer at the German university.
• Statement of professional and personal motives for the planned activity (motivation letter).
• Certificate proving university entrance qualification (example given: Abitur or Fachabitur) with individual grades.
• If applying as a Bachelor or Diplom student: list of all practical and seminar events attended so far (Transcript of Records, including Credit Points and grades according to ECTS).
• If applying as a Master student: list of all practical and seminar events attended so far (Transcript of Records, including Credit Points and grades according to ECTS).
