DAAD Scholarships Bilateral Exchange of Academics

The DAAD Bilateral Exchange of Academics (to Germany) aims to improve international relations and bilateral research cooperations between German universities and universities abroad. DAAD supports the mutual exchange of academics. The programme is based on cultural agreements between the Federal Republic of Germany and partner countries, as well as bilateral agreements with partner institutions abroad.

The programme is aimed at university teachers and experienced academics and scientists. Applicants are expected to have a doctorate and to work at a university or research institute in their home country. Applicants should coordinate the date and purpose of the stay with the host institution in Germany, which provides a workplace. The exchange must be agreed bilaterally, and the partner organizations recommend qualified candidates to DAAD.

Selection is decided by an independent selection committee based on the submitted documents. The most important selection criteria are academic achievements shown through the curriculum vitae and list of publications, and a convincing and well-planned research project agreed with the host institution. Because it is a bilateral exchange programme, funding for a visit to Germany is awarded only if researchers from Germany also travel to the applicant’s country for research stays.

Funding covers a research stay lasting at least 14 days (for applicants from EU countries: at least 7 days) up to a maximum of three months. Applicants indicate the desired funding length in the application form, and the funding period is then determined during selection. The grant cannot be extended. Funding must begin in. Health insurance coverage is mandatory in Germany; if the applicant does not have home health insurance, DAAD provides insurance and deducts the costs from the scholarship payment.

• You must work at a university or research institution in your home country.
• You should have a doctorate.
• You must coordinate the date and purpose of your stay in advance with your host institution in Germany (the host institution provides a workplace).
• Based on a bilateral MoU with CSIR and the IITs in India, the exchange of faculty is only possible for scientists and faculty at research institutes of the CSIR or the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
• The partner organizations recommend qualified candidates to DAAD.
• Because this is a bilateral exchange programme, a visit of the German counterpart should be agreed upon.
• Research stay should last at least 14 days (for applicants from EU countries: at least 7 days) and should be max. 3 months.

1. Apply online via the DAAD portal.
2. Register in the DAAD portal.
3. Complete the online application in the DAAD portal by entering application data.
4. Download and complete the online application form.
5. Prepare application documents, including scanning paper documents (except references) and saving them in PDF format.
6. If necessary, translate documents (unless they are already in German or English). Upload translations together with the document issued in the original language.
7. Upload the completed application form and other application documents to the portal in PDF format and submit them online.
8. Use a desktop computer for the portal, as mobile use is possible only to a limited extent.
9. Ensure the application is complete, because incomplete applications cannot be considered and you are responsible for completeness.

• List of your academic publications (max. 3 pages).
• Research proposal (max. 10 pages).
• Time plan for your planned research visit (naming the host institute(s) and academic hosts).
• Written confirmation from your host (informal) about the academic cooperation, referring to the proposal and guaranteeing that the host institute in Germany will provide a workplace.
• German or English translations of documents submitted in the national language (uploaded with the corresponding documents).
