The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) supports a carefully selected number of programmes for training specialists from development and newly industrialised countries. DAAD states that its development-oriented postgraduate study programmes promote training of specialists from these countries, and that well-trained local experts support sustainable development.

DAAD EPOS scholarships are for foreign graduates from development and newly industrialised countries from all disciplines. Candidates with at least two years of professional experience can take a postgraduate or Master’s degree in Germany at a state or state-recognised German university, and in exceptional cases take a doctoral degree to obtain a university qualification (Master’s/PhD) in Germany.

Selection criteria stated by DAAD include fulfilling necessary academic requirements and being expected to successfully complete a study programme in Germany, including an above-average result for first academic exam (top performance third) and language skills. DAAD also states candidates need a Bachelor degree in an appropriate subject, at least two years of professional experience, and proof that motivation is development-related with an expectation to take on social responsibility and initiate and support processes of change after the training/scholarship.

Funding duration is stated as 12 to 42 months, dependent on the study programme. DAAD states value includes monthly payments of 992 euros for graduates or 1,300 euros for doctoral candidates, and payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance coverage. DAAD also states a travel allowance is provided unless covered by the home country or another source of funding, and that under certain circumstances scholarship holders may receive a monthly rent subsidy and a monthly allowance for accompanying family members.
