KAAD Scholarship Programme Germany for developing countries students

KAAD’s Eastern Europe Programme offers scholarships for applicants from Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus, and for applicants of Catholic denomination (in exceptional cases also another Christian denomination if proposed by Catholic partners). The programme covers scholarships for all disciplines except theological courses (for theological courses, applicants are directed to contact Renovabis).

The programme includes multiple target groups and Germany plans, including postgraduates pursuing a master’s at a German university, young academics working towards a PhD degree in Germany, young academics planning a research stay in Germany, and university teachers planning a research stay. It also includes postgraduates in master’s programmes in their home country planning a study visit to collect material at a German university, and postgraduates planning study or deepening of scientific knowledge in Germany after completing examinations in their home country.

KAAD has a two-step application procedure. Applicants fill in the application form and complete the online application. If an applicant is eligible for the second stage, KAAD sends the necessary application documents. The second-stage application deadlines stated for the programme are 15 January (March scholarship award) and 30 June (September scholarship award) each year.

Support length depends on applicant category, with maximum durations stated for each: up to 24 months for master’s study, up to 36 months for PhD work in Germany, up to 12 months for a research stay linked to work toward a doctorate or habilitation in the home country, up to 6 months for a research stay planned by university teachers, and up to 6 months for a study visit planned by master’s students in their home country.

• Applicant nationality/region: applicants from all countries of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, Central Asia and the Caucasus
• Religious denomination: Catholic denomination; in exceptional cases also another Christian denomination if proposed by Catholic partners
• Programme/study plans and levels (Germany): postgraduates with a Bachelor’s degree who wish to pursue a Master’s degree at a German university (maximum 24 months)
• Programme/study plans (PhD in Germany): young academics working towards a PhD degree in Germany (maximum 36 months)
• Programme/study plans (research stay from home country work): young academics working on a doctorate or habilitation in their home country and planning a research stay in Germany (up to 12 months)
• Programme/study plans (after home-country examination): postgraduates planning a research stay or deepening of existing scientific knowledge in Germany after completing their examination in their home country, or planning a non-consecutive postgraduate or supplementary course of study (including further training for licensed medical practitioners)
• Programme/study plans (teacher research stay): university teachers planning a research stay in Germany (up to 6 months)
• Programme/study plans (master’s study visit to collect material): students in Master’s programmes in their home country planning a study visit (up to 6 months) to collect material at a university in Germany
• Disciplines: scholarships are awarded for all disciplines except theological courses

• Tuition fees for fee-based Master’s degree programmes can be funded in justified exceptional cases
