PROMOS Scholarship Program , University of Bremen

PROMOS is a DAAD sponsor program administered for the University of Bremen. It supports study-related stays abroad outside the Erasmus area using funds from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). For the host-country stay, partial scholarships are awarded for a maximum of 3 months per study period (BA/MA). Travel expenses are not covered. In addition, a short-term measure can be supported with a separate application.

PROMOS is for students enrolled with the goal of achieving their degree at the University of Bremen; mobilities in the home country are excluded. Doctoral students may only be eligible for partial scholarships for a fulltime language course or a subject-related course. For cooperative degree programs, students are eligible only if, according to the Office for Student Affairs, administrative responsibility is officially at the University of Bremen at the time of application.

Selection involves academic accomplishments (grade report), the meaningfulness of the planned stay abroad, foreign language skills, and the application documents. PROMOS representatives prepare nomination lists with a jury in the departments and forward them to the International Office, which makes scholarship allocations and sends grants by e-mail to scholarship recipients.

Support is provided for a maximum of 3 months per study period in the form of the partial scholarship plus a one-time course fee for an additional language or specialized course. For language courses, the program supports full-time courses abroad with at least 25 hours per week. After approval, International Office allocations are made in December and April. Health insurance for the host country is required, with an opportunity to take out a DAAD group insurance.

• Students must be enrolled at the University of Bremen with the goal of achieving their degree at the University of Bremen.
• Mobilities in the home country are excluded.
• Countries for which a travel warning has been issued by the German Foreign Office are omitted/excluded.
• Students in a cooperative degree program are only eligible if, according to the Office for Student Affairs, administrative responsibility is officially at the University of Bremen at the time of application.
• Doctoral students only may be eligible for support by partial scholarships for fulltime language course or subject-related course.
• Doctoral candidates cannot apply under the “Study Scholarships” support track.
• Only full-time language courses for students and postgraduate students at public and private universities abroad are eligible under the “Language courses” track.
• Eligible countries are most countries outside the Erasmus area.
• Stays in Switzerland are not eligible.
• Stays in EU countries including the EU overseas territories are not eligible.
• Stays in Iceland are not eligible.
• Stays in Liechtenstein are not eligible.
• Stays in North Macedonia are not eligible.
• Stays in Norway are not eligible.
• Stays in Serbia are not eligible.
• Stays in Turkey are not eligible.
• Visiting study stays in Great Britain continue to be funded by Erasmus.
• Financial support for mobilities to the Russian Federation, Belarus and the Middle East is excluded.
• For students without German citizenship, measures in the home country are excluded.
• Funding is excluded for measures for which there is another DAAD program track (such as annual scholarships, International Teaching Qualification, etc.).
• Funding may be granted on a subordinate basis only if the DAAD rejection notice is also submitted.
• Students who have special needs due to a chronic illness or disability can contact the respective representatives personally.
• Students with a disability (at least 50%) can apply for additional funding for “Subject-related courses” if funds are used to compensate additional costs abroad.
• In case of an internship abroad, any financial support and/or remuneration by the employer has to be stated.

• Partial scholarship for the host-country stay for a maximum of 3 months per study period (BA/MA).
• Monthly funding for studies, thesis writing and internships amounts to 350 Euro.
• For some countries, monthly funding can be up to 550 Euro.
• Travel expenses are not covered.
• Language courses: one-off sum of 500 Euro, if the course consists of at least 25 hours per week.
• Subject-related courses: 500 Euro per person, or a flat rate subsistence allowance.
• In addition to the regular three months per study period, a short-term measure can be supported with a separate application; this includes a language course or specialized course.
• Additional funding for students with a disability (at least 50%) may be available for “Subject-related courses” to compensate additional costs abroad.
• Health insurance for the host country is required; students may take out a DAAD group insurance.

1. Apply only once within the given deadline; incomplete applications or applications submitted after the deadline will not be considered.
2. Submit the application online in the online portal MobilityOnline, and upload all required documents before the deadline.
3. Apply through the PROMOS-Coordinator in the applicant’s department (even if exchange places from a different department are used).
4. If a PROMOS-Coordinator requires an additional hard copy or email version, submit it as requested.
5. Ensure the application includes the required set of documents as listed (letter of motivation, CV, transcripts, language certificate, current enrolment certificate).
6. Submit the form sheet “Preliminary Confirmation of Host Institution” as soon as possible; it may be uploaded after the application but no later than four weeks before the start of the official mobility period.
7. Plan to include any required “additional” materials early by checking with the PROMOS-Coordinator before the application deadline for whether further documents and format requirements apply.
8. If applying for more than one action (for example, a language course followed by an exchange semester), submit a complete application for each action (separate applications are required).
9. Do not change the project after the application deadline; changes cause the scholarship to expire automatically immediately.
10. For a short-term measure, submit a separate application.

• Letter of motivation (maximum 2 pages).
• Curriculum Vitae.
• Transcripts of academic records (for example PABO-/FlexNow).
• Language certificate (minimum B2 in the language of instruction; a language certificate can be obtained at the SZHB).
• Current enrolment certificate at University Bremen.
• “Preliminary Confirmation of Host Institution” form sheet (submitted as soon as possible; may be uploaded after the application, no later than four weeks before the start of the official mobility period).
