Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Scholarships

The Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung Scholarship Department awards financial grants to highly-qualified undergraduate and doctoral students from Germany and abroad who evidence high levels of social and political engagement. The Stiftung seeks to counteract social, political and gender discrimination and therefore gives preference to applications from women, students of non-academic and migrant backgrounds, the socially needy, and people with disabilities who demonstrate comparable achievements and commitment.

The Scholarship Department uses a direct application approach and covers different scholarship types. It awards grants to foreign students for Master studies (and PhD students for study or research) who are temporarily residing in Germany. Study Scholarships for foreign applicants require enrollment at a state or state-recognized German university and a plan to return to the home country after completing education; study scholarships for German students and some international students follow BAföG-linked criteria.

Selection and sponsorship criteria include high scholarly and professional qualifications (proof of above-average academic achievement at school and/or university), political and social engagement aligned with the aims of the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung, German language proficiency at B2 level or above, and personal/family background. For foreign study grants, applicants must meet the foreign-student conditions stated for that group. For PhD grants, funding applies to domestic and foreign PhD students from all disciplines except medicine, dentistry and veterinary medicine.

As stated for PhD scholarships, funding lasts for three years, and doctoral students must be accepted at a German university. The Scholarship Department also offers additional support for scholarship holders, including political education events and summer schools, workshops, symposia and educational trips, practical training in areas such as rhetoric and conflict management, and self-organization support through academic confidants and networks of the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation.
