University of Bremen Germany Ten Scholarships Offered for Afghan Students

Together with HERE AHEAD Academy, the University of Bremen is offering ten scholarships. Frauke Meyer (director of finance and administration at the University of Bremen) describes the basic idea as directly helping students in need using residual funds. The scholarship is aimed at Afghans who were unable to begin or complete their bachelor's or master's studies after the Taliban took power in their country.

The Omid Farda scholarship is for Afghan students who choose a subject from the range of subjects offered by the universities in the state of Bremen. Language and subject preparation takes place at the cross-university HERE AHEAD Academy. Language preparation includes German courses geared toward subsequent degree studies, and participants also receive specialized preparation to transition to regular studies.

Selection is based on application criteria stated in the scholarship announcement: being no older than 30 years, having a last degree no older than five years, providing proof of previous school or study achievements, and explaining the current risk situation. The scholarship also requires German preparation at the HERE AHEAD Academy to reach the required C1 level to continue with a bachelor’s degree.

The scholarship includes the amount of a blocked account required for international prospective students (twelve times the BAföG loan maximum rate of 861 euros) and a travel allowance. Students in Bremen and Bremerhaven must pay their own living expenses. The scholarship must be repaid in full in the event of early de-registration.
