The Doctor of Philosophy / Master of Philosophy (Department of English Language and Literature) at Hong Kong Baptist University supports research across Linguistics/Language Studies and Literary Studies. Linguistics/Language Studies includes bilingualism, contrastive linguistics, intercultural communication, gender and language, language acquisition and language learning, phonetics and phonology, pragmatics, semantics, sociolinguistics, syntax, text/discourse, world Englishes, applied linguistics, professional communication, multimodal communication, and Hong Kong English. Literary Studies includes topics from twenty-first century and contemporary literature to Victorian literature, postcolonial studies, literature and film, and related areas.
Students can study in a full-time or part-time mode. Funding options include UGC/RGC-funded and self-funded. Applicants for full-time PhD study under the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme are invited based on evidence of academic excellence, research ability and potential, and good communication, interpersonal, and leadership abilities. Admission via the fellowship is also considered alongside regular research postgraduate programmes.
