Eligibility Criteria for IMPRS PhD Scholarship
To qualify for the IMPRS PhD Scholarship, candidates must meet the following prerequisites:
- Language Requirement: Proficiency in English is mandatory. Applicants are encouraged to include TOEFL or IELTS results with their application if available.
- Eligible Countries: Open to applicants from all countries worldwide.
- Educational Background: Admission is primarily based on prior scientific qualifications and future potential. Candidates must possess a university degree or anticipate graduation before commencing their thesis work.
- Disciplinary Expertise: Distinctive proficiency in scientific knowledge within the relevant field is essential. Enthusiasm and collegiality are also highly valued.
- Educational Background: Applicants should hold, or expect to receive, a Master’s Degree in Life Sciences, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or Engineering before initiating their PhD thesis work. Exceptional candidates with a strong BSc degree are also welcome to apply, provided they have experience in independent research and thesis writing.
- English Proficiency: As the program operates in English, applicants must demonstrate a high level of spoken and written English proficiency. Including TOEFL or IELTS results with the application is recommended.
- Internal Candidates: Candidates previously affiliated with an IMPRS group for less than 12 months are considered “internal candidates” and are eligible for admission. However, they must demonstrate outstanding performance and potential to be invited for interviews.

The evaluation process includes a thorough review of eligible applications, considering the applicants’ national education system, conducted by internal experts.
Additionally, phone or Skype interviews may be conducted during the evaluation phase. Qualified applications proceed to faculty members for further assessment. Faculty members collaboratively short-list candidates for the interview week in Dresden.
