Université de Provence (Aix-Marseille I): the applicant's brief

6 findings
  1. The short answer

Université de Provence (Aix-Marseille I) is a public university in France with a broad programme mix across arts, sciences, business, and education. It suits international students who want a large subject spread and a straightforward public-university option in France.

  2. What you can study

The university offers 35 programmes across areas including Art, Arts Administration, Biblical & Theological Studies, Biology, Business, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Education, Entrepreneurship, Environmental Stewardship & Sustainability, and English. That range suggests options for students looking at both humanities and science-related study, but the full programme catalogue should be checked on the university website before applying.

  3. Getting in

International applicants should apply through the university’s official admissions process and confirm the entry requirements for the specific programme they want. Check the website for documents, deadlines, and whether any language or credential checks apply to your chosen course.

  4. What it costs

The university does not publish a tuition fee range; confirm the current fee with its admissions office. Living costs in France will also depend on your city, housing choice, and everyday spending, so plan for those separately.

  5. Coming from abroad

The language of instruction is not stated, so confirm that before applying. If you are moving from abroad, check the programme language, required documents, visa steps, and whether your previous qualifications are accepted for entry.

  6. How it compares

With 298 universities in France, this institution sits in a crowded national system and stands out mainly through its public status and its mix of 35 programmes. For an applicant comparing French universities, that makes it a practical option if you want a broad but not unlimited selection rather than a highly specialized school.

Written from this university's catalogue entry and its cited encyclopedia summary. Figures are only shown where the institution or a cited source publishes them — always confirm fees and entry requirements with the university itself before applying.

Overview

Aix-Marseille University is a public research university located in the Provence region of southern France. It was founded in 1409 when Louis II of Anjou, Count of Provence, petitioned the Pisan Antipope Alexander V to establish the University of Provence, making it one of the oldest universities in the Francophone world. The institution came into its current form in 2012 following the reunification of the University of Provence, the University of the Mediterranean and Paul Cézanne University, resulting in the creation of the largest university in the French-speaking world in terms of its student body, its faculty and staff, and its budget that currently stands at €856 million.
