Bachelor of Engineering Honours in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering Apprenticeship

Dundalk Institute of Technology’s Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Apprenticeship) is a Level 8 Honours degree apprenticeship that develops Advanced Manufacturing Engineers with knowledge, skills, and competence to improve productivity, quality, and efficiency of sustainable smart manufacturing operations. The programme supports engineers to work with new technologies and sustainable techniques for advanced manufacturing and digitisation.

The programme is delivered On Campus and takes 4 years. DkIT states that apprentices spend 70% of time in the workplace and 30% in DkIT. Delivery uses face-to-face classes that mix lectures, tutorials, workshops, and laboratory classes. Students complete one semester per year at DkIT campus in Dundalk, with the remaining time spent with the employer.

DkIT states that it is an “Earn while you Learn” programme where apprentices are employed and paid while registered on the programme. It leads to an honours degree qualification through the apprenticeship model.

Year 1: For CAO applicants, a minimum of 160 points, Pass (O6 or better) in 5 Leaving Certificate subjects, two of which must be Maths and a language (English or Irish). Leaving Certificate (Applied) is not suitable. For FET graduates, a cognate QQI-FET level 5 or 6 qualification with Leaving Certificate Mathematics is required. Mature students (over 23 years) do not require a Leaving Certificate but must pass a company interview.

Year 2: RPL review for applicants who have completed the first year of a cognate engineering programme plus 1 year of relevant industry experience. Learn about RPL at DkIT

Year 3: Higher Certificate in Manufacturing Engineering (Apprenticeship) or a cognate Higher Certificate in Engineering plus 2 years relevant industry experience.

Year 4: BEng in Manufacturing Engineering (Apprenticeship) or cognate Bachelor of Engineering plus 2 years relevant industry experience.

You must already be employed on a Manufacturing Engineering Apprenticeship contract before you can apply for the programme.

• Operational Excellence Projects, applying the tools of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Quality, Process Validation, Sustainability and Project Management
• Working with Robotics, PLCs, Sensors, Data Visualisation and System Integration
• Progress to senior roles as subject matter experts or in team leadership capacities within their companies
