DSU Scholarships, University of Milan

Regional scholarships are benefits aimed at ensuring the right to higher education under the Italian Diritto allo Studio Universitario (DSU). They consist of a sum of money and free access to refectory services. These scholarships are funded by the Lombardy Region and the Ministry of University and Research.

To be eligible, students must be regularly enrolled in a degree programme of the University of Milan and meet requirements in terms of academic merit and income. Students enrolled in vocational master’s programmes and postgraduate medical schools, as well as PhD students already in receipt of a scholarship or research grant, are not eligible. As general rules, categories also excluded include students who already receive similar benefits for the same programme year, part-time students or students on a shortened career path, repeating students, and students who already hold an Italian degree of the same or higher level as the programme they are applying for.

Regional scholarships are awarded annually through a public competition. Ranking lists are published first as provisional and then as final, with appeals available for review of documentation assessments. For students enrolled in the first year, eligibility depends on achieving the stated merit requirement; if not achieved within the deadline, the student forfeits the benefit. For students enrolled in second or later years, the ranking is based on number of credits and average exam results.

Winners are entitled to complete exemption from university fees and one free midday meal from Monday to Saturday. Partial winners receive a 50% exemption. Scholarship payments are made on “Carta La Statale,” and students must activate it as a Flash Up Studio La Statale prepaid card. To maintain the right to the scholarship, first-year students must earn the indicated number of credits and doctoral/postgraduate school students must sit the final exam; failure to meet the attended merit requirements can lead to the scholarship lapsing and repayment of amounts already received.
