Japan Tokyo Metropolitan University Tokyo Global Partner Scholarship

The Tokyo Global Partner Scholarship Program is awarded to high-achieving students who want to pursue graduate education at Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU). Its stated purpose is to bring together students from around the world and promote TMU as an educational and research hub for collaboration and innovation that contributes to the development of Tokyo and beyond.

It is for applicants seeking master’s and Ph.D. degree courses at TMU. Applicants must be enrolled at a partner institution of TMU offering the relevant level, or be based in a research institution, governmental organization, or company, located either in Tokyo’s sister cities or in other Asian country or region locations. The available graduate programs are the Master’s Course and the Doctor’s Course.

Selection is conducted through processes run by each graduate school under its application guidelines, which may include required pre-screening and/or a preliminary application for some applicants. In general, applicants are required to obtain permission to apply from a prospective academic supervisor, submit the required application documents, and take a written and/or oral examination in their field of study.

Benefits include an admission fee, tuition, international airfare, and a monthly stipend of 150,000 JPY, plus other supports such as housing referral services.

• Applicants must meet the entry requirements for admission to a graduate program at Tokyo Metropolitan University (TMU).

• Alternatively, applicants may be eligible if they work in a research institution, governmental organization, or company located in either Tokyo’s sister cities or any other Asian country or region.
• Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to collaboration and innovation for the enhancement of Tokyo and beyond.
• There is no upper age limit for applicants.
• Applications are accepted for both master’s and doctoral programs if all eligibility requirements are met.
• Language requirements differ by graduate school.
• Even if applying using English only, applicants are expected to learn basic Japanese after enrollment and attain a daily conversational level by the time they complete their program.
• Applicants cannot receive support from the Tokyo Global Partner Scholarship Program if they are already receiving another scholarship at the time of enrollment; after enrollment, other funding sources may be applied for if they do not conflict with the Tokyo GP regulations.
