University of Tokyo ADB-JSP Scholarship

The Asian Development Bank–Japan Scholarship Program (ADB-JSP) is funded by the Government of Japan and administered by the Asian Development Bank. Its stated purpose is to provide citizens of ADB member countries with opportunities to pursue graduate-level studies. At the University of Tokyo, additional Graduate School of Frontier Sciences departments are accredited to accept ADB-JSP scholars.

The University of Tokyo accepts ADB-JSP scholars in nine departments and one programme within the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences. Master’s degrees awarded correspond to the department/program completed, including Science, Life Sciences, Environmental Studies, International Studies, and Sustainability Science.

Selection involves a University preliminary screening followed by nomination by the University for ADB-JSP scholarship candidacy. Applicants who pass the University preliminary screening and meet ADB-JSP eligibility requirements are informed about applying for the ADB-JSP scholarship. The ADB-JSP then conducts its own screening.

For confirmed recipients, enrollment procedures for the Autumn Semester begin. Applicants also need to obtain a visa and enter Japan by the stated timing for the Autumn Semester, with enrollment available only for the Autumn Semester. The scholarship covers the scholar only, and ADB-JSP does not accept applications directly from applicants; applications go through designated institutions.

• Applicants must meet the eligibility requirements specified by the ADB-JSP and wish to enroll in the Master’s Programme of one of the listed departments or the educational programme.
• The University’s Graduate School of Frontier Sciences is not allowed to recommend candidates who are over 35 years old to ADB.
• Only Master course applicants are eligible; doctoral course applicants are not eligible.
• The ADB-JSP scholarship covers the scholar only (dependents are not covered).
• Applications must be made through designated institutions; ADB-JSP does not accept applications directly from applicants.
• Applicants taking Entrance Examination Schedule B for the Department of Integrated Biosciences are required to pay an entrance examination fee (fee is not waived).

1. Check whether you meet the eligibility requirements specified by the ADB-JSP.
2. Check whether there is a faculty member in your preferred department or programme who you wish to have as your academic supervisor, and follow the admission guideline procedures for applying for admission.
3. Wait for the University’s preliminary screening results; only applicants who pass the University preliminary screening and meet ADB-JSP eligibility requirements are informed of the procedures for applying for the ADB-JSP scholarship.
4. After the University nomination, the ADB-JSP conducts its own screening and communicates results to the University.
5. If confirmed to receive the ADB-JSP scholarship, follow the enrollment procedures for the Autumn Semester.
6. Obtain a visa and enter Japan by the stated timing required for Autumn Semester enrollment.
