University of Tokyo Japan Amgen Scholarship Program

The Amgen Scholars Program provides hundreds of undergraduate students the opportunity to undertake scientific research projects at many institutions. Its objective is to provide undergraduate students from different countries (including some from Japan) who are committed to or considering a career in biology or related sciences and looking to continue to graduate studies with eight weeks of biomedical research experience in basic and translational sciences. At UTokyo, research opportunities are provided by various Graduate Schools and Institutions.

Applicants must be undergraduate students attending colleges or universities across the Asia region that award a bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent). They must have completed their first year of undergraduate study by the time the summer program begins, not graduate before the summer program begins, and resume undergraduate studies for at least one semester or one quarter after the summer program ends. Applicants must have a strong academic performance record, a working knowledge of English as shown by specified test scores (or equivalent conditions), and interest in pursuing a Ph.D.

Selection requires a strong record of academic performance and assessment of English proficiency through the specified tests. Full participation is mandatory during the specified period, including orientation, required conferences and activities, social events, and the Amgen Scholars Asia Symposium, and scholars must give both oral and poster presentations describing their assigned projects.

Financial support includes accommodation in an off-campus residence near the Hongo/Yayoi Campus, economy-class airfare to Tokyo or round-trip train tickets for domestic students, and a stipend of 280,000 JPY. Students must arrange their own private health and travel insurance, and participants who commute to campuses other than Hongo and Yayoi receive an additional travel allowance. If the schedule changes due to personal reasons, participants must reimburse the University of Tokyo for the cost of initially arranged airfares.
