KIEP Visiting Scholarship and Fellowship Program for Foreign Applicants in Korea, 2017

Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) is pleased to offer two Fellowship Programs i.e. Visiting Scholars Program and Visiting Fellows Program. Foreign scholars are eligible to apply for these fellowships programme.

The overall objective of the Visiting Scholars Program is to promote exchanges and provide networking opportunities with researchers at KIEP and other universities or research institutes in Korea.

The Korea Institute for International Economic Policy (KIEP) was founded in 1990 as a government-funded economic research institute. It is a leading institute concerning the international economy and its relationship with Korea. KIEP advises the government on all major international economic policy issues and serves as a warehouse of information on Korea’s international economic policies. Further, KIEP carries out research by request from outside institutions and organisations in all areas of the Korean and international economies.

Degree Level: This is a visiting scholarship for three to six months.

Available Subject: Visiting Scholars Program are awarded in the international economics field of studies as well as Visiting Fellows Program are awarded in area studies (e.g. Brexit, Eurasian Economic Union, U.S.-China relations), development policy, and international economic policy.

Scholarship Award: Visiting Scholars Program

The duration of the program is one month and scholars will live and work in Sejong. KIEP will provide a round-trip airfare economy class and accommodation. The cost-of-living stipend will amount to approximately KRW 2,800,000, but otherwise, scholars must be able to provide their own transportation costs and living expenses. Scholars will submit a report for the KIEP World Economy Brief * which will be uploaded on the KIEP website.

Visiting Fellows Program

The duration of the program is three to six months. Scholars will live in Daejeon and work in Sejong. KIEP will provide a round-trip airfare economy class and accommodation. A lump-sum payment of KRW 2,500,000 will be paid to scholars upon arrival at KIEP plus the research support grant of KRW 4,500,000 paid in two instalments (50% pre-paid and 50% paid upon publication approval), but otherwise, scholars must be able to provide their own transportation costs and living expenses. Scholars will spend approximately 50-60% of the time on a self-directed research project (with a KIEP research fellow) and submit a working paper. The working paper will be published as a booklet. The remainder of the time will be spent on counsel on research and exploring opportunities for joint research.

Eligibility: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for the scholarship.

Eligibility criteria

Foreign scholars in the international economics field of studies are encouraged to apply. They should hold either i) doctoral degrees or ii) M.A. degrees with at least 7 years of relevant professional experiences in emerging economic policy issues. Working knowledge of English is required. Korean citizens and Korean nationals with permanent residence status in foreign countries are not eligible to apply.
* The KIEP World Economy Brief (WEB) is a five-page English report on the analysis of current issues related to various topics including economic cooperation, trade, investment, employment, and structural reforms.

Visiting Fellows Program

Eligibility criteria

Foreign scholars with research interests in area studies (e.g. Brexit, Eurasian Economic Union, U.S.-China relations), development policy, and international economic policy are encouraged to apply. Preferred qualification includes a doctoral degree and extensive research experience. Working knowledge of English is required. Korean citizens and Korean nationals with permanent residence status in foreign countries are not eligible to apply.

Nationality: Foreign scholars are eligible to apply for these fellowships programme.

Deadline: Applications are accepted all year round. A committee review is conducted biannually in June and December.  Applicants should select one of the following two Fellowship Programs.
