Doctor of Philosophy Applied Science

The Doctor of Philosophy (Applied Science) is a research-oriented program that develops the skills to apply scientific principles to real-world problems. Students conduct independent and original research under the supervision of experienced academics, aiming to produce new insights and innovations that connect theory and practice. Research areas include biotechnology and bioinformatics, environmental and climate science, food science and technology, health and biomedical applications, material science and nanotechnology, renewable energy and green technology, applied physics and instrumentation, computational and data science applications, and industrial and chemical process innovation.

The program includes credit hours recognition (R/0510/8/0002) (06/28) (MQA/FA8524) and a duration of 3 years. It is structured around research and research support courses: Research Methodology, Biostatistics, Graduate Seminar, and Thesis Writing. Candidates work on a thesis as part of the program requirements.

ENTRANCE QUALIFICATION BASED OF PROGRAM STANDARD (MASTER’S AND DOCTORAL DEGREE)

• A master’s degree accepted by the HEP Senate; or
• Other qualifications equivalent to a master’s degree that are accepted by the HEP Senate.

Note for PhD by Research:

• HEP can accept excellent graduates of Bachelor’s Degree (Malaysian Qualifications Framework Level 6), for direct entry into the Doctoral program (MQF Level 8) with the following conditions:
• A student qualifying for first class or equivalent; or
• Obtain a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.67 or its equivalent from the academic programme or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme; and
• Rigorous internal assessment by HEP; and
• Obtained approval from the HEP senate and accepted as candidacy of Doctoral programme, MQF Level 8. Students should show appropriate progress during the candidature.
• Students will not be awarded with a Master's Degree as an exit award if they do not fulfill their Doctorate level.

ii. Candidates registered for Master’s Degree by research programmes with a Bachelor’s Degree level may apply to convert their candidacy to the PhD programmes, subject to having shown competency and capability in conducting research at PhD level and approval by the HEP Senate.
