Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic Banking and Finance

The Doctor of Philosophy in Islamic Banking and Finance at Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Sultan Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah (UniSHAMS) is a research doctorate that focuses on Islamic finance and banking research. Students study theories, applications, and contemporary issues that include Islamic banking, takaful, Shariah-compliant investments, risk management, and Islamic economic development. The programme also integrates Maqasid Shariah, Islamic ethics, and financial innovation.

Students follow either a full-time or part-time research mode. Guidance comes from experienced lecturers and supervisors through research supervision, scheduled supervision sessions, seminars, and academic presentations. Research outcomes are intended to support academic knowledge and industry advancement, with an emphasis on critical analysis and practical, technical, and analytical skills.

Master's Degree (Level 7, MQF) in a related field as accepted by the University Senate; OR

Master's Degree (Level 7, MQF) in an unrelated field as accepted by the University Senate, subject to relevant work experience and strict internal evaluation; OR

Master's Degree (Level 7, MQF) in an unrelated field as accepted by the University Senate and without relevant work experience, subject to passing prerequisite courses; OR

Other qualifications equivalent to a Master's Degree (Level 7, MQF) recognized by the Malaysian Government.

For Doctoral Degree by Research as stated in the Standards: Master’s and Doctoral Degree:

• There shall be no direct entry from Bachelor’s Degree level to Doctoral Degree level.
• However, candidates with Bachelor’s Degree qualification, registered for Master Degree by Research programmes may apply to convert their candidacy to Doctoral Degree programmes.
• Application of conversion must be done within one year after candidate registers for Master Degree programmes.
• Application approval is subject to: having shown competency and capability in conducting research at Doctoral degree level; rigorous internal assessment by the HEP; and approval by the HEP Senate.
