Bachelor of Applied Science Psychology

The Bachelor of Applied Science (Psychology) from Open Polytechnic develops an understanding of the science of human behaviour and what happens in people’s minds to influence their behaviour. You study how people think, remember and feel, what drives motivation, and how personality is defined. You also learn the fields and sub-fields within psychology and how they relate to specific career paths and employment areas within Aotearoa New Zealand.

You take 360 credits at academic level 7 through online study. You work through course materials online at a pace that suits you, between the course start and end dates. There are no scheduled online classes, though some courses may include an in-person component such as practicum, workshops, noho marae, or an exam. A course facilitator supports you, with guidance from a Student Mentor and the Library and Learning Centre teams.

The course includes learning about scientific research methodologies and analysis, ethical behaviour in research and professional practice, and Aotearoa New Zealand’s bicultural context in line with the Treaty partnership with Māori. It also focuses on applying psychology in an Aotearoa New Zealand context, explaining behaviour from multiple perspectives, and producing evidence-based solutions. After you complete the degree, you may be eligible to enter graduate and postgraduate training required for working as a psychologist.
