The Open Polytechnic Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Civil Engineering) (OP700601) is an online Level 7 programme with 360 credits. It is designed for people with an aptitude for mathematics and science who want to develop real-life solutions by analysing, designing and constructing infrastructure facilities. The programme prepares you to work as an engineering technologist in areas including water and waste water, and roading and transportation.
You study online using course materials at a pace that suits you between the course start and end dates. There are no scheduled online classes to fit into your week, though some courses may include an in-person component such as a practicum, workshops, noho marae or exams. Your course facilitator guides you, with support from a Student Mentor and the Library and Learning Centre teams. Some courses require in-person laboratory and practical sessions (MG5002 Mechanics, MG5006 Land Surveying 1, MG5008 Fluid Mechanics (Civil), MG5009 Geotechnical Engineering 1, MG5107 Civil Materials), with each lab lasting between one and three days. You make your own travel arrangements and pay travel costs.
The programme is available only for part-time study. You can enrol in a maximum of two courses at a time. It leads to work as an engineering technologist and supports roles including working with a local authority, in a consulting engineer’s practice, or with a civil engineering contractor.
