The Open Polytechnic New Zealand Diploma in Architectural Technology (Level 6) [Version 2] is an online qualification at academic level 6 with 240 credits. It develops essential knowledge and skills for entering employment as an architectural technician and for people who are already working in the role. The learning includes construction principles, feasibility studies, client requirements, concept and building design, approval documentation, and architectural documentation using manual and digital technologies.

You study online using course materials and work at a pace that suits you between the course start and end dates. You need a laptop or desktop computer and reliable internet, and there is no need to travel to a campus. There are no scheduled online classes to fit into your week, although some courses may include an in-person component such as practicum, workshops, noho marae, or exam. A course facilitator guides you, with support from a Student Mentor and the Library and Learning Centre teams.

Graduates can evaluate performance and select materials and finishes, and apply knowledge of roles, responsibilities, documentation, and administrative requirements across tendering and construction contract management processes. The qualification supports working under the supervision of an experienced architectural technician, designer, or architect while producing working drawings for small and medium building projects of limited complexity through all stages to completion.
