The Open Polytechnic New Zealand Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care (Level 5) [Version 2] is an online qualification at academic level 5 with 120 credits. It prepares you to apply early childhood education practices in line with Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the place of Māori as tangata whenua. You also learn to use early childhood teaching, learning, and development theories to inform practice, and to implement Te Whāriki to promote children’s learning.
Online study forms the main delivery method. You work through course materials online at a pace that suits you between course start and end dates, with academic support from staff, a Student Mentor, and the Library and Learning Centre teams. You attend regional workshops and tutorials, and practicum during study. The programme can include an in-person component such as noho marae, workshops, and exams. During Professional Practice 1 (EDU508), you complete a five-week practicum at an approved licensed early childhood setting, with 30 hours per week in centre routines.
This qualification supports work as an early childhood educator in a range of early childhood settings, including centre-based, home-based, parent-led, hospital-based (as a play specialist assistant), nanny, and culturally based settings, including Pasifika and Māori contexts. The programme describes a recommendation to have helpful work experience in an early childhood service while studying, but it states you do not need to work in an early childhood service while studying.
