The New Zealand Diploma in Legal Executive Studies (Level 6) is an online qualification at academic level 6 with 120 credits. You study legal topics including contracts and torts; client relations and rules of professional conduct; trust accounting and office practices; sale and purchase of businesses and company law; trusts, wills, estates, and asset planning; debt collection, bankruptcy, litigation ethics, civil and family law procedures, legal aid applications, and District and High Court procedures; and buying and selling property (conveyancing) and sale and purchase agreements.
It is delivered as online study. You work through course materials online at a pace that suits you between the course start and end dates. You need a laptop or desktop computer and reliable internet. There are no scheduled online classes to fit into your week, but some courses may include an in-person component such as practicum, workshops, noho marae, or exam. A course facilitator guides you, and you have support from a Student Mentor and the Library and Learning Centre teams.
On graduation, you will be qualified to work as a legal executive under the supervision of a practising lawyer, in support roles for lawyers in law offices, banking, property, insurance, finance, or government. The qualification also provides one eligibility criterion for becoming a registered legal executive through membership of The New Zealand Institute of Legal Executives Incorporated.
