Graduate Diploma in Teaching Early Childhood Education

The Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) is a Level 7 qualification from Open Polytechnic. It equips ākonga with a recognised, flexible, and applied teaching qualification in the early childhood education context. Practical courses connect theory with practice and are aligned with sector needs, supporting work-ready graduates for teaching positions or further study at postgraduate level.

Learning includes applying in-depth understanding of te Tiriti o Waitangi, te reo Māori, and tikanga Māori in early childhood education settings. You also engage with tamariki, parents, families, whānau, colleagues, and external stakeholders. The programme uses current research and critical reflection to improve learning and teaching design during practicums, and includes professional learning and collaboration within and beyond early childhood education settings.

It is delivered through online study. You work through course materials online at a pace that suits you between the course start and end dates, with support from an academic facilitator, a Student Mentor, and the Library and Learning Centre. There are no scheduled online classes, but some courses may include an in-person component. You complete one compulsory noho marae during the programme and two practicums totalling 80 days.
