The Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary Education) at Open Polytechnic is an academic Level 7 qualification with 120 credits. You study Te Tiriti of Waitangi, te Reo Māori, and tikanga Māori in primary education settings, and you develop skills to engage with tamariki, their parents, families, whānau, colleagues, and external organisations.
Study is delivered online, with you working through course materials online at a pace that suits you between the course start and end dates. There are no scheduled online classes. You also complete practicum: two full-time 8-week practicums, supported by an Associate Teacher, plus school-based learning through an approved partner school.
To enter the programme, you need support from an approved partner school. You are expected to attend between 9am and 3pm as a minimum on specified days, and you must also complete one compulsory noho marae (overnight stay). After successful completion, you are eligible to apply for registration and a practising certificate to begin teaching in New Zealand.
