The Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary Education) at Open Polytechnic is an academic Level 7 programme with 120 credits. It prepares graduates to teach at secondary school level through practical courses that link educational theory with real-world teaching. Learning includes secondary education teaching tasks during practicum, plus use of research and critical reflection.
Delivery is online study. You work through course materials online at your own pace between the course start and end dates. There are no scheduled online classes to fit into your week, though some courses may include an in-person component such as practicum and workshops. You also need support from an approved partner school and complete a compulsory noho marae overnight stay.
After successful completion, you are eligible to apply for registration and a practising certificate to begin teaching in New Zealand, with a Tōmua | Provisional Practising Certificate as the first practising certificate you hold.
