The Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Secondary Technology Education) at Open Polytechnic is an online qualification for people who want to become secondary school technology teachers and do not currently hold a degree. It focuses on secondary technology education in ways that support Māori learners, including applying knowledge of te Tiriti o Waitangi, te Reo Māori, and tikanga Māori. You also develop communication for teaching technology and use research and critical reflection to improve design for learning and teaching.
You study online at your own pace using course materials, with academic support from staff and contact with students through iQualify talk channels, noho marae, and practicums. The programme includes compulsory noho marae and partner school involvement, plus two full-time practicums of eight weeks each. Full-time students complete two full days in a partner school each week, while part-time students complete one full day each week (in addition to practicum). You are guided by mentor and associate teachers while completing school-based tasks.
