New Zealand, Victoria University of Wellington, Therle Drake Postgraduate Scholarships

The Therle Drake Postgraduate Scholarship is available annually through the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation, established via a bequest made by John Drake in memory of his wife, Therle. The scholarship supports postgraduate students in Music to attend a short course; and/or attend and/or participate in a concert and/or masterclass in Europe, North America or Australia.

Applicants must be enrolling or have enrolled for postgraduate study at Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. The scholarship is open to New Zealand citizens, permanent residents and international students, and instrumentalists are eligible with preference that may be given to a piano student.

The NZSM Scholarships Committee selects the successful applicant in consultation with relevant Head of Schools and Programme Directors. Selection is based on the applicant remaining in good academic standing and meeting the eligibility requirements for postgraduate study at NZSM.

Support lasts for one year, with opportunity to reapply. Recipients must write a letter of thanks to the donor representatives on receipt of the award and provide an end-of-year progress report if requested. Recipients must remain enrolled in their course of study and demonstrate engagement and contribute to the community and environment of NZSM. The scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards, but it cannot be deferred to a later year; partial repayment may be expected if the recipient withdraws or fails to achieve satisfactory progress.

• Scholarship purpose must be for the student to attend a short course; or attend and/or participate in a concert and/or masterclass in Europe, North America or Australia.
• Applicants must remain enrolled in their course of study (also required under conditions).
• Applicants must submit a completed online application by 4.30 pm on the closing date, and any required supporting documentation (including references) must also be received by 4.30 pm on the closing date.
• Offers are conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme (full time is at the level of points considered by Studylink as full time) within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship.
• The scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
• Scholarship may be held in conjunction with other awards.

• Value: $15,000 each round
• Payment may be split among recipients depending on need and subject to available funds
• The scholarship supports a student to attend a short course; or attend and/or participate in a concert and/or masterclass in Europe, North America or Australia

2. Include required supporting documentation (including references) and ensure it is received by 4.30 pm on the closing date.
3. Use the scholarship-specific documents when applying: personal statement, detailed budget, copies of communication with host person(s) or organisation(s) overseas, and a reference from the principal supervisor.
4. Submit the application for consideration by the NZSM Scholarships Committee in consultation with relevant Head of Schools and Programme Directors.
