Victoria University of Wellington Jack Pearce Research Scholarship in History

The Jack Pearce Research Scholarship in History is established through the Victoria University of Wellington Foundation and offers students the opportunity to gain postgraduate experience in the area of History. The scholarship is intended for students facing financial hardship.

The scholarship is open to domestic and international students and is for Master’s by thesis or PhD students undertaking research in History at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. Students intending to transfer to Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington from other universities are eligible. Part-time students are eligible and can be supported on a pro-rata basis.

Selection is primarily based on academic merit and the University’s ability to supervise the proposed research. Preference is given to Master’s by thesis students; if there are no suitable Master’s applicants, the Scholarships Committee may consider PhD applicants. Where it is difficult to distinguish between applicants, financial need may be taken into account.

The tenure is one year. The $25,000 value is to be paid towards tuition fees, with the remainder paid directly to the student as a stipend. Recipients must write a letter of thanks to the donor and submit an end-of-year progress report. The scholarship cannot be held with other major postgraduate scholarships, cannot be deferred, and offers are conditional on enrollment at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.

3. Submit any required supporting documentation (including references) so it is received by 4.30 pm on the closing date for the application to be considered.
4. Include the scholarship-specific documentation: a brief description of the research topic to be undertaken; a personal statement; complete the Financial Information section of the application; and a reference to be requested via the online application.
5. Await the selection decision by the University Research Scholarships Committee; the Head of History will communicate the outcome with the donor’s family.
