Victoria University of Wellington New Zealand Wellington International Excellence Scholarship

The International School-Leaver Excellence Scholarship is an award run by Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. Its objective is to attract and support high-achieving international school-leavers who want to study in New Zealand at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington. The scholarship provides $10,000 towards tuition fees in the second year of study.

The scholarship is aimed at international full-fee paying students who completed at least two full years (Year 12 and Year 13) at a New Zealand secondary school and who are enrolling in their first year of their first undergraduate degree at the time of application. Selection is also linked to enrolment at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington in Trimester 1 of the year following application.

Selection is competitive and based on academic merit. A panel of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington International Office staff makes the selection decision. Applicants must submit a completed application including required supporting documents (including references) by the closing time, and late or incomplete applications are not accepted.

The tenure is two years. Recipients receive $10,000 for the second year of study, provided a Grade Point Average of 6 (B+ average) is maintained. Recipients must study full-time (at least 120 points a year) to continue holding the scholarship. Scholarship credit to tuition fees occurs after the final withdrawal date for Trimester 1 (roughly two weeks after the first day of the trimester). Recipients are expected to act as Ambassadors and participate in appropriate events if requested.

• Applicants must have completed at least two full years (Year 12 and Year 13) at a New Zealand secondary school.
• Applicants must be enrolling in their first year of their first undergraduate degree at the time of application.
• Applicants must have NCEA Level 2 (or 3 if taken in Year 12) endorsed with Excellence or equivalent in another qualification.
• Applicants must be enrolling at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington in Trimester 1 of the year following application.
• All recipients must be fully enrolled in a full-year programme within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship and by the deadline specified in the award email.
• Students must maintain a Grade Point Average of 6 (B+ average) to receive the second-year payment.
• Students must study full-time (at least 120 points a year) to continue to hold the scholarship.
• The Scholarship cannot be deferred to a later year.
• Applicants who wish to enrol directly from Year 12 may not apply unless they will meet all normal conditions by the end of their Year 12.
• Applicants on an official student school exchange for a minimum of six months instead of completing Year 13 may apply, and must gain admission through Discretionary Entrance.
• Excellence credits must be obtained in Year 11 or 12; credits gained in Year 13 cannot be included.
• Offers to NCEA candidates are conditional on gaining a Merit or Excellence endorsement on NCEA Level 3.
• CIE candidates need at least 230 over their best four subject units, or a predicted IB score of at least 34, and must gain at least 300 points on the UCAS tariff in Year 13 subjects.
• Recipients must also gain University Entrance and admission to their programme of study.
• If the recipient becomes a domestic student during tenure, they must advise the Scholarships Office as soon as possible; continuation after domestic student status is at the discretion of the University.
• If the recipient withdraws during tenure or fails to achieve satisfactory progress, partial repayment will normally be expected, and recipients must advise the Scholarships Office if they intend to withdraw.

• $10,000 towards tuition fees in the second year of study (credited to tuition fees after the final withdrawal date for Trimester 1).
• Guaranteed offer of a place in one of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington Halls of Residence, provided an accommodation application is received by 1 October.

3. Include a personal statement.

5. After submission, selection is made by a panel of Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington International Office staff.
6. For Halls of Residence, submit an accommodation application to University Accommodation by 1 October to receive the guaranteed offer.
