Wellington Tangiwai Scholarship – (School Leaver Scholarships for Excellence)

The Tangiwai Excellence Scholarship is a school-leaver scholarship from Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington, recognizing its commitment to supporting academically strong school-leavers to study at the University. Scholarships are awarded competitively based on academic excellence.

This scholarship is for domestic fee paying students who intend to enrol full time at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington in their first undergraduate degree in the year following application. Applicants must be completing specified New Zealand secondary study expectations at the time of application and be in Year 13 (or have completed Year 13 in the year prior and be taking a gap year).

Selection is made by the Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington Undergraduate Scholarship Committee based on academic excellence. Scholarship decisions are final.

The scholarship tenure is one year and is valued at $7,000 for the first year of study. Payments depend on the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme within the criteria and tenure, and no payment is made until this condition is met. The University may approve exceptional circumstances and can reallocate the scholarship if it is not accepted by the date specified in the award letter.

• Applicant must be a domestic fee paying student.
• Australian citizens or permanent residents, and dependents of diplomats must be completing at least two full years (i.e., their Year 12 and Year 13) at a New Zealand Secondary School at the time of application.
• Applicant must have NCEA Level 2 Certificate endorsed with Excellence (or Level 3 if taken in Year 12), or an equivalent level of achievement in an alternate qualification.
• Applicant must be intending to enrol full time in the year following application in their first undergraduate degree at Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington.
• Applicant must be in Year 13 (or have completed Year 13 in the year prior and be taking a gap year) at the time of application.
• Applicant must apply with a completed application including all required supporting documents (including references) received by 4:30 p.m. on the closing date.
• Scholarship offers are conditional upon the recipient being fully enrolled in a full-year programme within the stipulated criteria and tenure of the scholarship; no payment is made until this condition is met.
• Recipients must gain University Entrance and admission into their degree programme.
• Applicants who wish to enrol in the year following application directly from Year 12 may not apply unless they will meet all normal conditions of the scholarship by the end of their Year 12.
• Applicants must not have studied at another university or tertiary provider during a single gap year after completing Year 13.
• Applicants who go on an official student school exchange for a minimum of six months instead of completing Year 13 may apply, and need to gain admission through Discretionary Entrance.
• Applicants who have studied up to 60 points of courses at tertiary level during secondary school are eligible, including applicants who may have completed any VicStart funded (or equivalent) courses while still enrolled at secondary school.
• Applicants can only hold one scholarship in the school-leaver suite that includes Kahotea, Kahurangi Māori, Mana Pasifika, Mātātoa, Pakohe, Raukaraka, Tangiwai, and Totoweka.
• Applicants applying for multiple categories must fully complete all categories and submit all documentation for every category by the closing date.
• Disabled scholarship recipients may enrol less than full time and should discuss enrolment with Your Student Success Adviser and inform Te Maka—Scholarships Office.

• Value: $7,000 for the first year of study.
• Funds can be put towards accommodation costs at a Te Herenga Waka—Victoria University of Wellington hall of residence, excluding the initial deposit (including bond and other hall fees) due when accepting an offer of accommodation.
• Alternatively, funds can be used as a contribution towards tuition fees, credited directly to the student fees account once the first invoice is issued.
• Tenure: one year.

1. Submit a completed online application by 4:30 p.m. on the closing date.
2. Include all required supporting documents (including references) as part of the application submission so they are received by 4:30 p.m. on the closing date.
3. Ensure the application is complete; late or incomplete applications will not be accepted.
4. If applying for Tangiwai Excellence Scholarship only, no references or personal statements are required.
5. If applying for multiple categories in the school-leaver suite of scholarships, fully complete all categories and submit documentation for every category by the closing date for the application to be considered.
6. Submit the application and supporting documents through the school-leaver scholarship application process; scholarship categories can be monitored on the application dashboard.
7. Accept the scholarship offer by the date specified in the award letter, otherwise it will expire.
