  • Swansea University’s College of Medicine, in association with the Asthma UK Centre for Applied Research, invite applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship. Current work between the supervisors relates to providing UK-wide estimates of the costs of asthma. This work has revealed that there are significant information gaps in relation to indirect social and societal costs. The aim of this studentship is to perform a cost/burden analysis of asthma using questionnaire data and thereby address current evidence gaps on indirect costs, allowing the generation of accurate UK-wide estimates of the total costs of asthma. The student will undertake a nested cost/burden analysis based on detailed questionnaire data from primary care practices across Swansea and Edinburgh, within a UK-wide health economic study (outlined below). Through a two-stage sampling strategy, 35 patients will be randomly identified from each of 30 GP practices within each region. Allowing for a 50% uptake rate, 1000 patients will be recruited across sites in Swansea and Edinburgh.
