Implementing Building Information Modelling in process design and engineering could potentially reduce the risks in safety and efforts for maintenance during the operational phase of facilities such as oil and gas plants. Few efforts in chemical engineering industry have involved collaborative visualization and simulation such as BIM into process design and engineering. It was envisaged that implementing BIM might contribute to for example, reducing the needs for major repairs and alternations that will otherwise occur at the operational phase of plants. There should be an integrated data source providing information support for the entire plant project lifecycle. BIM can potentially fill the gap by acting as visual model and database throughout the entire lifecycle.
