About this scholarship

The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is Ireland's flagship national scholarship for research masters and PhD students. It is funded by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and managed by Research Ireland (formerly the Irish Research Council). The programme supports outstanding research in all disciplines at eligible Irish higher education institutions and is open to applicants of any nationality.

Each scholarship is worth up to €34,000 per year and includes a stipend of €25,000 per annum, a contribution to fees of up to €5,750 per annum (non-EU nationals may request up to €4,000 in additional fee support) and a direct research expenses allowance of €3,250 per annum. Funding is available for one to four years depending on the degree: up to two years for a research masters and up to four years for a PhD.

The call opens each September and closes in October, with successful scholars starting their awards on 1 September of the following year. Selection is based on an objective, international peer-review assessment of the applicant, the proposed research and the host institution. The average success rate is about 18%, so applicants should prepare a strong, well-supported proposal with their supervisor.
