Russia Open Doors Scholarship 2027 (Tuition Free Admission)

About this scholarship

The Russia Open Doors Scholarship 2027 is a tuition free admission competition run by the Russian Government for international students at participating Russian universities. It covers Bachelor's, Master's and PhD study, with winners studying under the Russian Government education quota.

It is open to foreign citizens and stateless persons who want to study in Russia. Winners receive tuition free study, priority in university selection and a funded Russian language preparatory year where applicable. There is no application fee. Registration and portfolio deadlines are listed on the official page, so check the sections below for details.

What the award covers

One of the main advantages of Open Doors is the opportunity to obtain tuition-free admission under the Russian Government education quota.

Eligible degree-track winners can receive:

  • Tuition-free study at participating Russian universities

  • Priority in university selection

  • Access to eligible Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD programs

  • A federally funded preparatory program for Russian-language study when applicable

  • Opportunity to study at participating Russian universities

  • No application fee for entering the Open Doors competition

Some additional government financial support may be available to qualifying winners or runners-up who obtain quota admission and meet the applicable conditions, particularly for full-time study in Russian. This should not be interpreted as an automatic cash stipend for every Open Doors winner.

Postdoctoral winners follow a different route. They can receive a research position at an organizing university rather than a degree scholarship.

Study levels

The Open Doors International Olympiad is a Russian government-supported competition for international students and researchers who want to study or conduct research in Russia.

Instead of applying directly for a scholarship at one university, applicants first compete through the Open Doors system. Successful candidates can then use their results to access participating Russian universities and government-supported study opportunities.

The competition has separate tracks for different academic levels:

  • Bachelor’s

  • Master’s

  • PhD

  • Postdoctoral

The application process is therefore not identical for everyone.

Subjects

The Open Doors competition covers a broad range of academic disciplines. The main subject areas include:

  1. Applied Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence

  2. Biology and Biotechnology

  3. Business and Management

  4. Chemistry and Materials Science

  5. Clinical Medicine and Public Health

  6. Computer and Data Science

  7. Earth and Environmental Sciences for Sustainability

  8. Economics and Econometrics

  9. Education and Psychology

  10. Engineering and Technology

  11. Physical Sciences and Technology

  12. Politics and International Studies

  13. Russian Language and Culture

  14. Urbanism and Civil Engineering

Applicants should choose a field that matches their previous education, achievements, and intended academic direction.

How to apply

How the Open Doors Scholarship Application Works

The competition can be understood as a three-stage process, although the exact requirements differ between Bachelor’s, Master’s, PhD, and Postdoctoral applicants.

Stage 1: Registration, Entry Test and Portfolio

The first stage begins with online registration.

Applicants create an account on the Open Doors platform and provide their personal information. They then select their academic track, subject area or intended research field, and competition language.

The registration and portfolio must be completed by November 1, 2026 for the current competition.

Applicants generally need to:

  • Complete the Stage 1 entry test

  • Prepare a motivation letter

  • Provide information about academic or professional achievements

  • Upload supporting evidence of achievements

  • Upload their passport

  • Provide educational documentation where required

Documents should be submitted in English or Russian. If a document is issued in another language, an appropriate translation may be required.

The passport information entered in the application should match the passport that will later be used for identity verification.

How Many Subject Areas Can You Choose?

Applicants can compete in more than one subject area, but they should choose fields that genuinely match their academic background.

Selecting several fields does not necessarily mean that applicants receive one combined examination. Each subject area can have its own Stage 2 assessment and schedule.

Therefore, applicants should avoid selecting unrelated fields simply to increase their chances.

A strong application normally has a logical connection between the applicant's previous education, achievements, motivation letter, selected field, and future academic plans.

Stage 1 Results

The Stage 1 results for the current competition are scheduled for November 13, 2026.

Applicants who successfully pass the portfolio stage can continue to Stage 2.

At this point, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD applicants move toward their respective examination process, while Postdoctoral applicants follow a different research-focused pathway.

Stage 2: Online Examination

Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD applicants who pass Stage 1 must register for a Stage 2 examination.

For the current cycle, the Stage 2 registration deadline is November 16, 2026.

The examination is conducted online under proctoring. Applicants may need to use a webcam and allow the examination system to monitor the computer environment.

The examination session is approximately 180 minutes and includes written and oral-response components.

Applicants should prepare using the official subject-area programs and sample tasks provided by Open Doors.

What Is Required for Stage 2?

Applicants generally need:

  • An active Open Doors account

  • The passport used during registration

  • Identity verification

  • A suitable computer

  • Webcam access

  • Reliable internet

  • Registration for an examination slot

Applicants should test their equipment before the examination rather than waiting until the scheduled test.

What Happens After Stage 2?

The process differs depending on the academic level.

For Bachelor’s and Master’s applicants, the competitive process largely concludes after Stage 2. Their final results are scheduled for December 21, 2026.

PhD and Postdoctoral applicants continue to an additional stage.

Stage 3 for PhD Applicants

PhD applicants face an additional stage involving potential research supervisors and doctoral-track managers.

This stage is particularly important because passing the academic competition alone does not necessarily complete the PhD admission process.

PhD applicants can participate in interviews with:

  • Prospective research supervisors

  • Doctoral Track managers

Applicants can discuss:

  • Proposed research interests

  • Research plans

  • Motivation for pursuing a PhD

  • Publications

  • Patents or inventions

  • Conference participation

  • Previous research experience

  • Employment related to the research field

  • Academic and scientific achievements

  • Knowledge of the proposed research area

A PhD candidate can ultimately become a winner when a prospective supervisor agrees to supervise the applicant or a Doctoral Track manager recommends the candidate for admission.

Stage 3 for Postdoctoral Applicants

The Postdoctoral track has a different structure.

Rather than taking the same academic examination as degree applicants, Postdoctoral candidates present their research achievements.

The process includes:

  • Portfolio assessment

  • Research-achievement video presentation

  • Interviews with research project leaders

A Postdoctoral candidate becomes a winner when a relevant research project leader agrees to employ the candidate on the applicable project.

University Selection After Winning

Winning the Open Doors competition is not necessarily the same as completing university admission.

Bachelor’s and Master’s winners or eligible runners-up later complete the formal Russian Government quota admission process.

They can select:

  • The language of instruction

  • One field of study or specialization corresponding to their winning subject area

  • Up to six Russian universities offering the relevant field

This means applicants should understand the difference between the Open Doors competition and the later university placement process.

PhD applicants follow a different pathway because their university placement can depend on acceptance from a prospective supervisor or Doctoral Track manager.

Documents Required After Winning

The documents required for formal admission are different from the documents used during the initial competition.

After winners or eligible runners-up are announced, applicants receive instructions concerning registration in the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education's relevant international admission system.

Depending on the applicant's circumstances, formal admission may require documents such as:

  • Passport

  • Educational certificates

  • Academic transcripts

  • Translations

  • Other documents required by the selected university or Russian authorities

Applicants should follow the instructions provided through their Open Doors account rather than assuming that the same documents are sufficient for every stage.

Is IELTS Required for Open Doors?

There is no single universal IELTS requirement for entering the Open Doors competition.

The competition itself is conducted in English or Russian.

However, applicants should remember that the university they eventually attend may have its own language requirements. Applicants should therefore check the language requirements of their selected program and university before final enrollment.
