Eligibility

To be considered for the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarship 2027, applicants must satisfy both the Oxford graduate admission requirements and the scholarship eligibility conditions.

Applicants must:

  • Be applying to start a new full-time graduate course at the University of Oxford.
  • Apply for an eligible course.
  • Be ordinarily resident in one of the eligible countries.
  • Demonstrate a connection between their chosen subject and long-term career objectives.
  • Explain how their professional work could contribute to improving public life in their country of origin or at a wider regional or international level.
  • Intend to return to their country of ordinary residence after completing their course.
  • Be offered a place on an eligible Oxford course.
  • Submit the required Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarships Statement.
  • Meet the relevant Oxford course admission requirements.

The scholarship is not open to applicants holding deferred offers to start in 2027–28.

Students who are already studying at Oxford are also not eligible to apply unless they are already Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholars.

Applicants should understand that admission to Oxford and selection for the scholarship are separate stages. Being academically eligible for an Oxford course does not automatically result in a scholarship award.

Leadership and Career Requirements

The scholarship places particular importance on the relationship between an applicant’s academic plans and their future professional contribution.

Applicants should be able to explain:

  • Why their chosen field of study is important to their long-term career.
  • How the Oxford degree will support their professional objectives.
  • How their future work could contribute to public life.
  • How their work could benefit their country, region or the wider international community.
  • Why returning to their country of ordinary residence is relevant to their plans.

The Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarships Statement is an important part of the scholarship application because Oxford uses it to assess these areas.

Documents required

  • Oxford graduate application form, submitted by the December or January deadline for your course.
  • A completed Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarships Statement, uploaded with your application.
  • If shortlisted, an interview (usually held online in April).

How to apply

Applicants must first apply for an eligible graduate course at the University of Oxford.

The application process is:

  • Choose an eligible Oxford graduate course.
  • Review the course-specific admission requirements.
  • Check the relevant Oxford application deadline for the chosen course.
  • Complete the University of Oxford graduate application.
  • Select the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarships and Leadership Programme in the funding section of the application.
  • Complete the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarships Statement.
  • Upload the scholarship statement together with the graduate application.
  • Submit the complete Oxford graduate application by the relevant December or January deadline.
  • Wait for the Oxford course admission decision.
  • If shortlisted for the scholarship, participate in the interview.
  • Wait for the final scholarship decision.

Oxford states that applicants must be successful in receiving an offer for their eligible course after consideration of applications submitted by the relevant December or January deadline.

Applications held over for consideration with later March applications or applications placed on a waiting list are not eligible for scholarship consideration.

Application Deadline

There is not one universal application deadline for every Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarship applicant.

For 2027–28 entry, applicants must submit their Oxford graduate application by the relevant December or January deadline for their selected course.

The exact deadline therefore depends on the Oxford course being applied for.

Applicants should check their individual course page and submit the graduate application by the earlier applicable deadline rather than assuming that a later Oxford admissions deadline will qualify them for the scholarship.

Selection Process

The selection process involves several stages.

First, applicants submit their Oxford graduate application and Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarships Statement by the applicable course deadline.

Applicants must then receive an offer for an eligible Oxford course to remain eligible for scholarship consideration.

Shortlisted candidates are expected to participate in an interview, which is likely to be held online in April 2027.

Oxford expects scholarship decisions to be made by the end of May 2027.

The University states that unsuccessful applicants will not normally receive individual feedback because of the volume of applications.

College Allocation

Oxford graduate students are members of both their academic department and an Oxford college.

Applicants may indicate a preferred college as part of their graduate application or leave the college allocation to the University.

The Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Scholarships have partnerships with several Oxford colleges. Successful scholarship recipients may therefore be transferred to a partner college when taking up the scholarship.

How winners are chosen

Awarded to outstanding graduates and professionals, mainly from developing and emerging economies, who could not otherwise afford to study at Oxford. You must be starting a new full-time graduate course, intend to return to your home country, and show a clear link between your studies and your career goals for improving public life. Candidates are assessed on the application form, the Weidenfeld-Hoffmann Statement and, if shortlisted, an interview.
