Wang Gungwu Fellowship

The Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows Programme (WGWVF) honours Professor Wang Gungwu and is aimed at building the next generation of scholars and policy makers through policy-relevant research. It focuses on the nexus of big-power relations and its impact on Southeast Asia, including international politics and security, regional economics, and digital technology.

The programme covers priority research areas including developments in US–China relations and their impact on Southeast Asia; Asia Pacific security issues; progress and prospects of global or regional economic cooperation initiatives; the rise of China and its impact on Southeast Asian communities; and the use of digital media and technology by countries to further their interests and influence perceptions in Southeast Asian countries.

Selection is based on an application process, and shortlisted applicants are contacted for an interview. During the fellowship, fellows are part of a network of regional scholars, contribute through ISEAS activities as invited, and may speak at an in-house seminar on their research findings.

The programme provides a fixed monthly stipend (inclusive of a housing subsidy) for the duration of the fellowship at ISEAS, plus round-trip economy airfare between the fellow’s home country and Singapore. Fellows receive access to office space, computer equipment and IT services, and ISEAS Library and other facilities where appropriate, and may be invited to a meeting with Professor Wang Gungwu during the fellowship, where possible.

• Mid-career policy makers may apply even if they do not have a PhD or equivalent degree, provided their CV or resume can show an appropriate level of professional experience and research interest.
