Sasol Foundation Bursary

The Sasol Foundation Bursary Programme offers a comprehensive bursary to talented individuals who are planning to study full-time towards an undergraduate degree to pursue STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) careers, or towards non-STEM qualifications. Priority for STEM is given to degree studies aligned with future capabilities listed by the programme, and the bursary is intended to provide both financial and developmental support throughout the study period.

The programme is limited to South African citizens (by birth only) who are / will be pursuing full-time degree studies at an approved public South African University or University of Technology. STEM bursaries are reserved for qualifying children of Sasol employees, Khanyisa/Inzalo shareholders, or candidates from Sasol fence-line communities. Non-STEM bursaries are reserved for qualifying students from Sasol fence-line communities, children of Sasol Khanyisa shareholders, or children of Sasol employees.

All applicants undergo screening based on South African citizenship (by birth only), household income verifications, whether the applicant qualifies for STEM or Non-STEM bursaries based on the reserved categories, and academic performance. The final selection prioritises financially needy and academically competitive candidates.

The programme is for first undergraduate degrees, and applicants must meet academic and age requirements. University students applying for later years must have an average of 60% for all modules. The programme states bursaries may be withdrawn/terminated if it is determined that the student has not physically permanently resided in the specified municipalities during the date of application/awarding, and that all bursaries are subject to completion within a maximum period of 5.

• Institution type: Studies must be at an approved public South African University or University of Technology.
• Level: Must be doing their first undergraduate degree.
• Postgraduate: Postgraduate bursaries will not be available for the forthcoming academic year.
• STEM vs Non-STEM category rules: STEM bursaries are reserved only for qualifying children of Sasol employees, Khanyisa/Inzalo shareholders, or candidates from Sasol fence-line communities. Non-STEM bursaries are reserved only for qualifying students from Sasol fence-line communities, children of Sasol Khanyisa shareholders, or children of Sasol employees.
• Household income: Combined household income must not exceed R800,000.00 per annum.
• Academic performance: Academic performance of the applicants is used for screening.
• Academic results for first-year degree studies: Must have completed matric within a year from the time of submitting an application or currently completing matric this year if applying for 1st year of degree studies.
• Academic results for later undergraduate years: University students applying for 2nd / 3rd / 4th year must have an average of 60% for all modules.
• Age: Must not be older than 25 years of age at the time of bursary application.
• Selection emphasis: Final selection will prioritise financially needy and academically competitive candidates.
• Screening: Applicants must undergo household income verifications.
