Geology - Master Programme at Lund University trains students in the formation and structure of Earth, climate variations, prehistoric life, and evolution. Students also develop an understanding of how knowledge of Earth’s dynamics can contribute to addressing societal challenges. The programme includes modern geological methods such as geochronology, geochemistry, isotopes, sedimentology, dating techniques, palaeontology, landforms, and the formation and distribution of soil.
Teaching includes lectures and exercises in well-equipped classrooms and teaching laboratories. Students work with advanced research equipment, including geochemical analysis instruments, microscopes for rock types and microfossils, and dating laboratories. Fieldwork is essential, with field courses and excursions in Sweden and abroad. The first semester includes courses in geoscientific methodology and sedimentary geology and basin analysis, and the second year includes a thesis project of 30, 45, or 60 credits, which typically includes fieldwork followed by analysis in a research laboratory.
