URIS Fellowships at the University of Basel

The URIS Fellowship at the University of Basel is for internationally recognised researchers to undertake a six-month research and teaching stay and receive a monthly allowance plus specified reimbursements.

• Applicants must be internationally recognised researchers prepared to be involved in the network of Swiss-Ukraine research.
• Applicants must offer a Ukraine-related course at the University of Basel during their stay in Switzerland.
• Applicants must have a university degree and an excellent PhD in the humanities, cultural studies, or social sciences.
• The application is open to both younger and experienced scholars.
• Applicants must have experience in university teaching and be willing to conduct a one-semester course (1.5 hrs per week) at the University of Basel during the fellowship semester.
• The course must be held in English or German.
• Applicants must have an ongoing research project with the potential to make a substantial contribution to a better understanding of the history, society, politics, and culture of Ukraine.
• Applicants must have a clear and substantial connection to Ukraine; interdisciplinary or comparative projects are welcome as long as Ukraine remains a central focus.
• Applicants must have completed a PhD before applying.
• English or German language proficiency must be supported by proof with the application; an English language certificate is not required in cases where applicants do not have an official English language certificate, and the URIS Scientific Advisory Board may reach out for further clarification in individual cases.
• Applicants must be willing to reside in Basel during the fellowship period.
• Applicants may apply without a current university affiliation.
• Applicants must submit only digital applications.

• Monthly allowance of CHF 4000.
• Reimbursement of visa fees.
• Reimbursement of accident and health insurance coverage in Switzerland.
• Reimbursement of one round trip to and from Basel from the country of origin.
• Reimbursement of a subscription entitling the holder to half-price travel on the Swiss Federal Railways.
• Reimbursement of all work travels within Switzerland.
• Shared office station at the University of Basel with access to all digital infrastructure.
