Diploma in Nursing Programs in the USA: Top 20

This is the part of American nursing education where the credential you choose decides which licence you can sit for — and the twenty entries below are not all aiming at the same licence. Registered nurse, licensed practical nurse and certified nursing assistant are three different occupations with three different scopes of practice, and all three appear in this list.

How this list is ordered: Ordered by each university's QS World University Rankings position where it has one, then by research citations recorded by OpenAlex; one programme per university, and universities with neither measure are left out.

Questions about entry-level nursing qualifications

Which of these makes me a registered nurse?

The associate degree and hospital diploma routes prepare you to sit the registered nurse licensure examination. A practical nursing programme leads to the practical nurse examination instead, and a certified nursing assistant programme leads to a state certification that is not a nursing licence. Check the title of each entry before comparing anything else about it.

Is an associate degree enough to get hired as a nurse?

It is enough to be licensed, and many employers hire associate-degree RNs. The profession has been shifting towards the bachelor's degree as preferred preparation, and some hospitals prefer it for new hires or expect completion within a period after joining. The usual answer is to qualify on the associate degree and complete a bachelor's afterwards through an RN-to-BSN route, often with employer support.

What is the difference between an LPN and an RN?

They are separate licences with separate examinations and different scopes of practice, set by each state. Practical nursing is a shorter preparation — the entry here is a three-semester programme — and practical nurses generally work under the direction of a registered nurse or physician. Bridge programmes from practical nursing into RN preparation are common.

How do I know a programme is approved?

Through the state board of nursing's own published list of approved programmes, and separately through the accreditor's directory. Neither is recorded here. Approval governs your eligibility to sit the licensure examination; accreditation also governs whether a university will later accept your credit into a bachelor's completion route.

Can I do a pre-licensure nursing programme online?

Not completely. The theory courses are widely delivered online in the United States, but supervised clinical practice and skills laboratories are in person by necessity. Every entry here is recorded as on campus and full time, and for a pre-licensure programme that is the realistic expectation regardless of how the coursework is delivered.
