Masters in Public Health Programs in the USA: Top 20

Almost every public health master's in the United States teaches the same five pillars — epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy, environmental health and behavioural science — so comparing syllabuses gets you nowhere.

What actually separates the 448 programmes on record is everything around those pillars: whether the degree narrows to epidemiology and data, whether it is tied to a medical college or a planning school, how many supervised practice hours it demands, and which community it was built to serve. The twenty below are set out with those differences in front.

How this list is ordered: Ordered by each university's QS World University Rankings position where it has one, then by research citations recorded by OpenAlex; one programme per university, and universities with neither measure are left out.

1 Masters Public Health

University of California, Los Angeles

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations67,096,936

UCLA teaches public health as a global subject rather than an American one. The core runs through epidemiology, biostatistics, health policy and environmental health, and case studies bring in problems from outside the United States.

The specialisation choice is where the degree takes its shape: community health sciences, environmental health sciences or global health. Internships and group projects carry the applied side, and graduates move into community health education and environmental health roles.

2 Dual Master of Urban and Regional Planning & Master of Public Health

University of Colorado at Denver

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations15,342,765

This is two master's degrees at once — urban and regional planning alongside public health — and it exists because the things that make a city unhealthy are usually planning decisions.

You study planning and health in the same programme: environmental health, community health assessment, policy analysis and the core planning courses. Internships and joint projects apply both halves to real urban problems.

3 Masters Indigenous Public Health

University of Hawaii at Hilo

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations5,966,195

Hilo's master's is built for health work in Indigenous communities, and that shapes every part of it. Traditional knowledge sits beside modern public health practice instead of being treated as background.

The content covers health disparities, cultural competency, community engagement and Indigenous health systems. The argument running underneath is that a strategy designed elsewhere tends to fail locally. Graduates coordinate health programmes and manage nonprofit organisations.

4 Masters Epidemiology (M.P.H.)

Oregon Health Sciences University

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations12,765,777

Oregon's MPH narrows to epidemiology, the study of how health and disease spread through a population. You learn to measure how common a disease is, read the data honestly and turn findings into practice.

Biostatistics, research methods and environmental health fill out the core. The training is analytical throughout, so the people it suits are those who want to answer health questions with numbers rather than manage programmes.

5 Masters Health Education & Promotion

The University of Alabama

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations4,511,886

Alabama's degree is about changing behaviour, not tracking disease. You study health behaviour theory, then learn to plan a programme, assess what a community actually needs and measure whether anything improved.

Core courses and electives lead to a capstone you deliver in a real setting. The design work is the heart of it: building health education that fits the population it is aimed at. Graduates become health promotion specialists, programme coordinators and policy research analysts.

6 MS in Epidemiology

Augusta University

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations3,770,178

Augusta runs this as a Master of Science rather than an MPH, which tells you where the weight sits. Epidemiological method, study design and data analysis take up most of the degree.

Biostatistics and disease prevention strategy complete the core. Students come out able to work in the statistical software the field runs on, which is what separates an analyst from a graduate who has only read about analysis.

7 Master of Public Health (M.P.H.)

New York Medical College

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations2,594,824

New York Medical College teaches the full MPH core and then lets electives decide your direction, finishing with a capstone project.

Sitting inside a medical college changes the atmosphere of a public health degree. The case material leans clinical, and the questions tend to start from patients and health systems rather than from policy documents. Graduates coordinate health programmes, work as environmental health scientists and research inside healthcare organisations.

8 Masters Epidemiology

Loma Linda University

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations2,096,477

Loma Linda splits epidemiology into its two real halves: infectious disease, which moves fast, and chronic disease, which builds over decades. Both are taught properly here.

Biostatistics and research methods supply the technique, and social factors in health get their own treatment rather than a passing mention. Professional development courses and research placements run alongside.

9 Master of Public Health (MPH)

SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations2,004,020

SUNY Downstate sits inside a health sciences university, so public health is taught next to the clinical professions rather than apart from them.

The five core areas are all covered, electives let you narrow down, and a capstone puts the learning into a real setting. Students leaving here go into environmental health inspection, community health education and public health research posts.

10 Masters Epidemiology

Wright State University

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations1,483,197

Wright State's master's in epidemiology asks three questions about any health condition: where is it, what causes it, and what does it do to a population.

Biostatistics, research methods and prevention strategy give you the tools to answer them.

11 Master in Public Health

Texas Tech University-Health Sciences Center

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations1,454,012

Texas Tech's health sciences centre runs an MPH built around evidence. The five core areas are there, but the stated aim is narrower: read the data, design an intervention, then run it.

Health systems get real attention, which matters if you want to work inside one rather than study it from outside. Theory and practice are deliberately mixed through the course. Graduates become environmental health specialists and public health researchers.

12 Master of Clinical Health Services

University of Alaska - Anchorage

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations843,924

This one is not an MPH, and the difference is worth noticing. Anchorage's Master of Clinical Health Services is about running and evaluating health services rather than studying population health.

The content reflects that: health economics, health informatics and healthcare policy alongside epidemiology. Socioeconomic influence on health outcomes runs through the teaching. Graduates work in clinical research coordination, health informatics, policy analysis and community health.

13 Masters Applied Epidemiology (M.P.H.)

California State University, Northridge

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations604,788

Northridge calls its MPH applied epidemiology, and the word applied is doing real work. Disease surveillance, outbreak investigation and the evaluation of health interventions are the three practical skills it trains.

That is the toolkit a health department actually uses when something starts spreading. Teaching mixes theory with placements in live public health settings. Graduates become field investigators for health agencies, data analysts and policy advisers in health departments.

14 Master of Public Health

Louisiana State University - Shreveport

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1.25 – 2 years
  • Research citations535,548

Shreveport's MPH is run jointly by the university and the LSU Health Sciences campus. Its core courses are mapped onto the 22 competencies and 12 knowledge areas that the Council on Education for Public Health expects every graduate to demonstrate.

The practical requirement is specific: a 150-hour practicum, then either a capstone or a thesis. Placements run through community partners. Two named ones are the Martin Luther King Health Center and the agricultural centre the university runs.

Applying takes three electronic recommendations sent to the programme director, plus an asynchronous interview you record rather than attend.

Entry requirements, as the university states them

  • Three electronic recommendations submitted to the MPH Program Director;
  • Completion of an asynchronous interview.

Morehouse School of Medicine

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations503,554

Morehouse School of Medicine teaches public health inside a medical school, and the focus falls on community health outcomes throughout.

The core covers epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health, health policy and behavioural science. What students practise is the full cycle: analyse health data, evaluate a programme that already exists, then design the intervention that replaces it. Internships and research projects supply the setting.

16 Masters Clinical Research Administration

University of New Haven

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations472,958

New Haven's degree trains administrators for clinical trials, which is a different job from public health practice. The subject is how research on human beings is run legally, ethically and on schedule.

Biostatistics and data management sit beside regulatory affairs and trial ethics. Project management is treated as a core skill rather than an afterthought.

Claremont Graduate University

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations381,908

Claremont's MPH leans towards analysis and policy. You learn to take a public health problem apart, design a promotion strategy for it and then evaluate whether the strategy worked.

All five core areas are taught, with fieldwork and case studies keeping the work concrete. The two career routes the programme names are public health policy analysis and environmental health, both of which reward the evaluation skills the degree concentrates on.

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations368,120

Midwestern starts everyone on foundation courses before any specialisation is allowed, which suits applicants coming into public health from another subject.

Once the base is laid, you choose where to go deeper across the five core areas. Theory and practical work are paired at each stage. The named exits are public health administration, environmental health and data analysis in the health sector.

19 Bs Ms Public Health with Health Science

Towson University

  • DeliveryOn campus
  • Study modeFull time
  • StartsSpring semester admissionFall semester admission
  • Research citations358,643

Towson's accelerated route is a bachelor's and a master's stitched together. Public health undergraduates substitute nine units of health science master's work for undergraduate classes, and those units count towards both awards.

Graduate-level study usually begins in the senior year, with the nine units taken at 500 or 600 level after the junior year is finished.

To be considered you need 60 to 80 units completed or in progress and a declared public health major. The grade average must reach 3.00 by the end of the preceding spring term.

Entry requirements, as the university states them

  • Completion of /or current enrollment in 60-80 units (may include transfer units)
  • Declaration of a Public Health Major (all concentrations are eligible)
  • Minimum overall GPA of 3.00 by the end of the Spring term preceding screening for admission
  • During the second term of the senior year, students must also complete a graduate application with Admissions to be officially admitted to the graduate program

  • Study modeFull time
  • Duration1–2 years
  • StartsFall, Spring
  • Research citations321,540

Meharry Medical College frames public health as local and global at once, and the degree keeps both scales in view throughout.

The five core areas are covered together rather than in isolation, on the argument that a real health problem never arrives as one discipline. Coursework, research and fieldwork are mixed across the programme.

Public health master's degrees in the USA: what applicants need to settle first

Is an MPH the same as a master's in epidemiology?

No. The MPH is a broad professional degree and covers all five core areas. A master's in epidemiology, such as the ones at Augusta and Wright State, drops most of that breadth and spends the time on study design, disease patterns and statistical software instead. Pick the narrow one only if data work is the job you want.

What are those 22 competencies I keep seeing?

They come from the Council on Education for Public Health, which sets 22 competencies and 12 areas of knowledge that every public health master's graduate should be able to demonstrate. LSU Shreveport builds its core courses directly around that list. Employers and doctoral admissions committees recognise it, so it is worth knowing which programmes follow it.

How much supervised practice is involved?

LSU Shreveport is the most specific: a 150-hour practicum followed by either a capstone or a thesis, with placements at partner organisations. Most of the others pair internships or fieldwork with a capstone project but do not publish an hours figure, so ask the programme directly before you assume they match.

Which degree suits work with one particular community?

Hawaii at Hilo runs a master's in Indigenous Public Health that puts traditional knowledge beside modern practice and treats cultural competency as core content. Colorado Denver's dual degree is the choice if the community problem you care about is an urban one, because planning and health are taught together there.

Can I save time by combining degrees?

Yes, two ways. Towson runs an accelerated route where a public health bachelor's and a health science master's overlap, with nine units counting towards both. Colorado Denver's dual award gives you planning and public health together instead of taking them one after the other.
