BA Music and

The BA Music combined degree at SOAS (School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London) focuses on musical traditions of Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and their global diasporas. Students study music from perspectives including ethnomusicology, anthropology, politics, and history, and survey Asian and African musical cultures.

Performance is a central component, and students develop expertise in a variety of musical performance traditions. The course combines academic and practical skills, including research methods, critical theories, fieldwork practice, sound recording, podcasting, presentation skills, and musical performance.

Full-time undergraduate programmes consist of 120 credits per year, taught over 10 or 20 weeks, in modules of 30 or 15 credits. Some two-subject programmes are completed in 3 years, while others take 4 years and include a year abroad.
