SOAS offers the BSc Development Economics in the Department of Economics. Students study economic principles and methods through modules such as Economic Principles (Macro), Economic Principles (Micro), Applied Economic Issues in the Global Economy, and Elementary Statistics and Statistics. The degree also includes development-focused modules such as Global Development Approaches and Global Development Issues, plus option modules including Global Development and accounting and business-society topics like Financial Accounting 1, Financial Accounting 2, and Management and Society.
The programme has a duration of 3 or 4 years and is full-time on campus. Students take 120 credits composed of Core, Compulsory and Optional modules. Core modules are mandatory and must be passed in the year they are taken before progression. Compulsory modules are mandatory, and failed elements can be carried into the next year if they are retaken and passed. Optional modules let students choose modules while maintaining fundamentals.
Students can apply for an optional year abroad in their second year of studies at SOAS. Students are invited to information sessions during their second year by the Study Abroad team, and student applications are considered on academic merit and a personal statement, subject to availability. Eligibility requires achieving 55% or higher in their first year of studies.
