Doctor of Business Administration

University of Cumbria’s Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is a doctorate-level programme for senior executives and professionals with a track record in management. It is based on a sustained, self-directed applied research project. Learners choose an independent research area in business, management and/or leadership, then develop critical thinking, strategy-development, and problem-solving alongside a peer community of senior leaders.

The DBA is delivered on a part-time basis and typically takes 4-5 Years to complete. It uses flexible, blended delivery with face-to-face learning, digital support, online group seminars, and tailored individual tutorials. The first five modules begin with residential block delivery on the Lancaster Campus. Assessment includes 5,000 word assignments, a 10,000 word DBA Proposal and Plan with presentation, a thesis submission, and an oral defence.

DBA structure includes modules such as Developing an Applied Research Strategy and Advanced Research Methods, followed by DBA Proposal and Plan and DBA Thesis. The programme is designed so your research project explores a management, leadership, and/or collaboration question and builds applied research knowledge that contributes to related theories and concepts.

A 1st or 2:1 honours bachelors degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline from a recognised university in the UK or comparable university overseas. Candidates may also have a masters degree.

By exception, applicants will be considered with additional evidence of substantial relevant professional experience instead of relevant academic qualifications. This will include business or organisational management or leadership, or related organisational consultancy, appropriate to the proposed research. Applicants will typically have a minimum of five years’ experience; however each application will be considered individually.

For candidates whose first language is not English, they should provide evidence that either they possess an overall IELTS score of at least 7.0 with a minimum of 6.5 in each of the 4 elements (or an equivalent English language qualification recognised by the University) or evidence that their Master’s degree was conducted in English. English Language will be assessed throughout the Admissions process via a 2000 word pre-interview essay and interview.
