The Law Research Degree (PhD) programme at SOAS accepts candidates who want to undertake a significant and original research project leading to a PhD in Law. Students study a chosen legal topic through research, aiming to produce a dissertation/thesis of up to 100,000 words that makes a distinct and original contribution to knowledge. SOAS highlights its postgraduate research student body focus on international, critical and/or regional legal study, often involving fieldwork in Asia, Africa, or the Middle East.
Attendance can be full-time or part-time, with on-campus study. The programme includes School of Law Postgraduate Research Training Seminars in the first year to introduce principal practical and methodological issues in postgraduate legal studies. Candidates must hand in a draft Research Plan by the beginning of the third term of the first year, based on a research paper, draft dissertation abstract, draft table of contents, draft bibliography, and working schedule. Doctoral candidates are first registered as MPhil, with upgrading from MPhil to PhD at the end of the first year, supported by a supervisory committee.
Study is supported by close work with a first supervisor and a second supervisor, plus a departmental director of doctoral studies (research tutor). After the first year, candidates plan their time to finish their draft thesis in time before the end of their third year of registration. Doctoral candidates are encouraged to take part in research activities and events, including the PhD Colloquium and activities organised by Research Centres.
Applicants must normally have an advanced degree equivalent in level and content to the School of Law’s LLM or MA. Candidates are encouraged to make contact with potential first supervisors, with relevant expertise in the topic the candidate wishes to study, before they apply.
