MA Developmental Therapeutic Play

The MA Developmental and Therapeutic Play explores how play shapes children’s development, learning, and emotional wellbeing. University of Wales, Swansea says the course blends academic insight with reflective practice, and is delivered by the Department for Education and Childhood Studies. It focuses on developmental and therapeutic value across education, social care, psychology, and playwork settings, and is intended to deepen play expertise in health, education, social care, and community contexts.

University of Wales, Swansea says teaching uses participatory sessions grounded in students’ lived, cultural, and professional experiences of play, with interactive contact time and some flipped sessions using short materials before class. The programme includes non-directive play approaches, and students can choose to study on a single day each week or study full time or part time. Learning also includes ways to apply theory in settings such as schools, early years environments, day care, out-of-school clubs, holiday play schemes, and specialist provision.
